Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Caused by the presence of a substance that may cause adverse effects on humans, animals, and the environment. There are hundreds of air pollutants generated from natural or anthropogenic activities. When ozone forms air pollution, it’s also called smog. Some air pollutants are poisonous. Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen, and mold spores may be suspended as particles.
Air Pollution Types:-
- Criteria Air Pollutant– Pollutants in outdoor air. NAAQS are currently set for carbon monoxide, lead, ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide. for six common air pollutants (also known as “criteria air pollutants”). These pollutants are harm your health and the environment and cause property damage.
- HAPP( Hazardous Air Pollutants ):- Emissions of hazardous air pollutants. through rulemaking to include 188 hazardous air pollutants. Ex:- cadmium, Benzene formaldehyde
- Non-criteria pollutants:- – No limit is allowed. Mercury, Asbestos, Arsenic, Vinegar chloride All pollutants not classified as criteria air pollutants can be said to be non-criteria pollutants. Non-criteria pollutants include benzene, dioxins, and pesticides.
(a)Primary air pollutants:- Those that are emitted directly into the air from sources. Examples – Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile organic matter, particulate matters, lead, ammonia etc.
(b) Secondary air pollutants:- A secondary pollutant is not directly emitted into the air from sources but forms when other pollutants react in the atmosphere. Ex:- O3, H2SO4,PAN (Peroxy Acetyl Nitrate )
